SFedU Scientists Started the Field Research on Radiation Monitoring

14.07.2017

Scientists of Southern Federal University within the initiative of the Information Center on Atomic Energy (ICRA) and with the support of the Rostov regional branch of the international public organization "Living Planet" began the first stage of field work on radiation monitoring of the state of the environment in the area of the temporary storage of radioactive waste.

A group of students and employees of the Physics Department, the Institute of Physics and the Academy of Biology and Biotechnology of Southern Federal University together with the representatives of "Living Nature" conducted measurements with professional radiation devices and selection of dozens of samples of vegetation and soil at various depths from the surface to 170 cm. Sampling was conducted in three selected characteristic points of the terrain. Now these samples, after carrying out special procedures for sample preparation, will be thoroughly studied with the help of highly sensitive measuring equipment to determine the content of natural and artificial radioactive isotopes.

The results of the measurements will be presented in autumn at a joint press conference with the NGO Zhivaya Nature.
